Villains or morally grey characters will easily and often do corruption. Though I will add as an interesting food for thought, it would be interesting if the protags are the ones who are more corrupt while the antags are the less corrupt, and I mean where protags are more heroes and antags are more villains (but not necessarily all the way). It is for a reason I won’t explicitly state right now, but enjoy this meme and try to think on it. Side characters can be all over the spectrum. They can be useful in corruption by having contacts or favours to call in, they can be nuisances who need a bribe or else they’ll cause issues, they can be outright obstacles who require much more than the protags can do to be dealt with. I recommend being careful so it doesn’t become an obstacle for the sake of having an obstacle but rather a natural thing. Like the series I spoke about before with the AIs, bribery is rampant because it is incentivised to be so as the AI’s really don’t care if you drug yourself to death or not. Anyway, jokes aside, a rule of three is fine. With repetition, I mean not “repeat the same thing identically,” but more that you use similar structures in language with minor changes. You will see examples below. You can repeat similar things in threes (with maybe a fourth to bring things home). But the point of each repetition is one and the same: to bring home a point or bring out emotions. You can easily use multiple different repetitions within the same speech to serve different purposes. One repetition can serve to make a point and guide people toward the cause, another to build their faith in their own abilities, then a third repetition for the call to action. The important thing to remember is that the repetition has to serve a purpose in the emotional buildup. Are you noticing a trend of emotion building in speeches? If not, please go and check if you need glasses! Another thing to keep in mind is that generally, but not absolutely, longer repetitions are better suited for causing or directing emotions, but shorter ones are better for pure emotional buildup. But the shorter ones require a much more careful choice of words in order to evoke emotions. While this is rarely thought of as such, it is trade, and I will show why it still counts. Why does trade matter? How much time do you have at hand? 24 hours a day, that is all you get by decree of time itself! Even if you work 12 hours a day, sleep 8, and then spend 4 hours enjoying life, that is not a lot of time. You can do everything yourself, at which, let’s face it, you’ll suck at everything. This is where early small scale trading comes in. As the image below of one of the characters from my WIP Series: Ambition shows, they are in fact humanoid! Yes, as I have said I think in the last practicum by me, I make all of mine humanoid or very close. I want it that way and I love it. They are humanoid planimals but as the image shows–Irruma is her name by the way–they do not have hair but rather long vines. The thickness may vary. The flowers on it are an indication of her sex; she is an ultimale. A primale would have thorns instead of the flowers, and a midmale (the third sex) would have coloured vines. Primales and ultimales have only green coloured vines, but the midmale’s colour depends on the season. Ultimale flowers, however, can be quite colourful. Notice also they have claw-like structures on their four, yes, four, fingers. These are made out of keratin and cellulose to create a thorn-claw like structure. They also have long leaf-like ears, and their eyes have a distinctive diagonal slit like pupils. For nearly all raixhe, the pupils are in the shape of / \ when looking at them. A distinctive thing about their sensory perception is the fact that their olfactory (smelling) sense is not tied to their breathing. The four small slits on their nose open into a secondary chamber inside their nose where olfactory cells are quite numerous. They can then push said air into their lungs or mouth depending on how they are currently breathing. So even when holding their breath, they are capable of smell. War exhaustion is about the civilian population and their tiredness of a war. If they stop believing the war is justifiable because they are tired of it, bad things can happen! Casus Belli This is one of the reasons why casus belli, or the reason for war, was and is so important. Not only do you, as the government, need to justify to your own people that the war is legitimate and necessary and thus gain their willingness to support the effort with their work, but you also need to do it for international observers. So how is low war exhaustion maintained at home? Generally one way: propaganda! Propaganda has a negative connotation in normal speech, but it is academically very neutral. It means “Communication intended to influence and persuade the other party to further a specific agenda”. All nice and neutral! It can be used for good–lots of you have likely done it with memes for good–and it can be used for evil like it is commonly associated. This can be done by active ads, posters, or people moving about talking at street corners and more. It can also be done indirectly by skewing the numbers. Too many died in a battle? Fudge the numbers a bit, and it looks better! A classical example of the more active kind is posters that demonise the enemy. This works because it feeds into the beliefs that the enemy has to be stopped due to their perceived wickedness. This is a very classic piece of propaganda from World War One. Wait, you have to specify that it was the first one? Divinum, why did you have two!? Anyway, it was American propaganda and demonised the Germans in order to get people to enlist. The brutes must be stopped, and you are doing it for a good cause to save others! Other techniques include putting forth your own virtues or “showing” how well the war is going. All this keeps morale up and war exhaustion down. The issue, however, is when shells and explosions start happening where you live. TCCMC has a distinct logo that resembles the shape and structure of a simplified cognichip. The colors are intended to be fairly neutral to emphasize the company’s stance on neutrality, and also represent natural colors from the environment to highlight how the company sees itself as blending technology and nature together by bringing technology to people across known space. The golden-yellow along the outside stands out the most, bringing energy to the color scheme. In the image below, the letter T is in the middle representing TCCMC. This is for our benefit here on Earth and for those of us who use the Latin alphabet. On other planets that use different alphabets, the letter or symbol corresponding to the “T” sound, or Tshutsi symbol, would be shown. The logos are embedded on the cognichips and on products as well, and because of the variety of languages and writing systems, collecting cognichips and products with different versions of the logo is a hobby for many people, similar to stamp collecting. Everyone might have a Dominion logo due to how many people live in the Dominion–we are talking trillions with a capital T–but if you have a Sinitian one, you’re set! As you can see from that great example, propaganda can work! The push to make Finland’s cause Sweden’s concern has led to Vivian, decades later, feeling kinship with zhir fellow Nordic country. Of course, that propaganda is based on an existing sense of kinship between the Nordic countries. Propaganda can’t come out of nowhere; it can only heighten what already exists and then slowly shift people further and further away. This particular example shows that propaganda can be positive, though! It’s always good to help others and view them as siblings (again, my opinion there as someone who likes peace and friendship). (Vivian: Propaganda works best when there is a grain of truth to it, second best if there is a general belief that there is a grain of truth ot it) In terms of the ads themselves, propaganda tends to exaggerate the creative elements in ads, which I’ll get to soon. They play everything up to have a greater impact, or they used to. Caricatures of various figures are common, with features being exaggerated to emphasize whether the person is “good” or “evil.” Today, when people are more media savvy, propaganda is often quieter and more subtle (though certainly not always!). Be on the lookout for messages that play into your hopes and fears perfectly and discourage critical thinking, and in your stories, play up propaganda to get people to do and believe things they otherwise wouldn’t. In terms of building character, you can show a lot about your characters based on what they buy into and how easily swayed they are. Maybe they’re good at ignoring certain types of ads, subtexts, and cultural norms, but they always believe everything their mom tells them, and she isn’t so quick to be skeptical. Or maybe you have a character walking through a market who keeps getting pulled in by people hawking their wares, either because they’re genuinely interested (and easily distracted) or because they’re too polite or shy or conflict-averse that they don’t know how to avoid the salespeople. Maybe you have a military character who absolutely believes in the righteousness of a war even though to an outsider it's clear that the war is unjust and they’ve bought into government propaganda. It’s just such a good way to show a character’s strength of will, morality, and gullibility without smacking the reader in the face with it. In terms of plot, advertising can play a huge role! For instance, the whole plot might center around an orphan who discovers that they’re actually the heir to the kingdom (a chosen one!) (Vivian: Yet so trite) but they have to earn the support of the people before anyone will take them seriously, so they start a campaign to earn the public trust. They’re advertising themselves. Use the strategies of advertising to make their slow climb into people’s trust realistic! (Vivian: Trust the heir) And of course, Vivian’s favorite, the world itself. Societies, as I’ve discussed, use advertising to create and maintain a status quo that keeps people believing what they need to believe and buying what they need to buy in order to keep things going. If you don’t know what’s going on in the ads, you might not know what the underlying cultural beliefs of your people are. Look at your world, and think of a business there. I’m sure you have at least one business, right? Futuristic detective agency? Assassin for hire? Tavern? You’ve got to have something. But what is a bacteria? They are part of the large family called prokaryotes; the word means essentially “Before the cell nucleus”. There are further subdivisions, but for the sake of understanding them here, all you need to know is that bacteria are generally much simpler than eukaryotic cells (those we have, meaning “After the nucleus”). You can have their morality deviate somewhat from the norm in a vacuum without additional reason but not massively so. If you still want to make them adhere to our moralities, which I will inform you happily are not new as similar morals are millennia old, then you can use many various means to have them be exposed to said moralities. Typically education, art, philosophers and so on may contain these naturally in a setting, especially the latter. Albeit historically they have also backfired strongly as some philosophers have been super into authoritarianism, but hey, you can make it interesting then! Failing to properly tweak this to make it fit is an example of “Hammering on the cog to make it fit”, as I say. Please read the rules in the link in the beginning. I will reiterate this just so all writers can feel safe and not start crying harder than a spineful human: just because your protagonist is a cog that has to fit into the world does not in any way mean that they have to be entirely identical to those around them or lack the specialness of protagonisthood. It only means it has to be constructed in such a manner with background and everything that their deviation is not a clipped off piece of nail stuck in media consumer’s eyes.
